Choosing an Approach

SEO Agency vs GEO Software vs an AI Recommendation Specialist: What Each Actually Fixes

All three can help a company show up in AI answers, but they fix different problems. An SEO agency fixes whether Google finds you. GEO software fixes whether you're monitoring and publishing in a structured way. An AI recommendation specialist fixes why AI can't confirm you for your buyers' actual questions. Pick the one that matches your problem, not the one with the best pitch.

Full disclosure: I'm the third option. So I'll be specific about where the first two are the better choice.

The three options, side by side

SEO agency

What it fixes
Whether your pages rank in Google: technical health, content, links.
What it measures
Rankings, organic traffic, leads from search.
Best for
Companies whose buyers still search Google and click, and sites with technical problems.
Falls short
Ranking and being named by AI are different results. Most agencies don't measure whether AI names you, so they can't tell you when it doesn't.

GEO software

What it fixes
Monitoring what AI says about you across many prompts, and publishing structured, AI-friendly content, often on autopilot.
What it measures
A visibility score, citations, mentions, AI referral traffic.
Best for
Local and small businesses with simple, common buyer questions ("best dentist near me"), usually for a few hundred dollars a month.
Falls short
It can't fix what usually breaks complex B2B companies: category language that doesn't match the buyer's question, a split identity, and a missing footprint in the independent sources AI uses to confirm a recommendation. Generic content doesn't solve those.

AI recommendation specialist what I do

What it fixes
Why AI can't confirm you for your buyers' real questions: positioning in the buyer's words, one consistent identity, the independent sources AI trusts, and pages AI can read.
What it measures
The share of your buyers' real questions where AI names you and describes you correctly, in its first answer. I call it the AI Endorsement Score.
Best for
Established B2B, industrial, and manufacturing companies with long sales cycles, specific technical questions, and deals where one lost lead is expensive.
Falls short
Slower and more expensive than software, needs input from your team, and nobody, including me, can honestly guarantee a ranking.

Which one do you need?

  1. Google can't find your site at all? Fix SEO first. AI search tools lean on search indexes, so if you're not indexed, nothing else works.
  2. Local business, simple questions, tight budget? GEO software is probably enough. Try it before hiring anyone.
  3. AI names your competitors for the questions your buyers ask in large deals? That's usually one of six reasons, and most of them need positioning and footprint work, not more content. That's a specialist's job.

They also combine well. A good SEO agency and a specialist don't overlap much: one makes sure you're found, the other makes sure you're confirmed.
