How It Decides

The five possible answers, and the questions behind them

Each answer you give adds weight to one or more of these outcomes. The one that matches your situation best is your result.

The five possible answers

  1. Diagnose before you hire anyone. Before you hire a CMO, an agency, or anyone else, find out what is actually broken. Your answers say growth is stuck, but not clearly why. Hiring into that is expensive guessing: an agency will do its usual package, and a new executive will spend months finding the problem. A short diagnosis first means whoever you hire works on the right thing.
  2. A Fractional CMO. You need senior marketing leadership, not a full-time executive salary. You have a real business and a team or partners who can execute, but nobody senior is setting direction, choosing priorities, and holding the work to a commercial result. That is exactly the gap a Fractional CMO fills.
  3. A full-time CMO. At your size and pace, hire a full-time CMO. You need someone leading marketing every day, managing a team, and sitting in every leadership meeting. A Fractional CMO can bridge the gap while you hire, or help you define the role, but the answer you need is a full-time hire.
  4. An agency or a specialist. You need hands, not another strategist. Your direction is clear enough, and the problem is capacity: the work is not getting done. A good agency or a specialist freelancer will get more done for the money. Bring in senior strategy later if results stall.
  5. Stay founder-led for now. Not yet. Keep marketing founder-led and invest in the product and first clients. At this stage, a CMO of any kind would be paid to wait for things that only you can do: talk to buyers, win the first references, and sharpen the offer. Come back when revenue is steady and you know which buyers you want more of.

The questions it asks

  1. Roughly how much revenue does your company make a year?
  2. Who does marketing today?
  3. Could your leadership team say, in one sentence, why buyers choose you over the next option?
  4. Which sentence sounds most like your situation?
  5. How do you think about the cost of marketing leadership?
  6. Who would this person mostly work with?
  7. Have you worked with a marketing agency before?

Questions

What is a Fractional CMO?

A senior marketing leader who works with your company part-time, setting direction, priorities, and accountability, without the cost of a full-time executive hire.

When is a full-time CMO the better choice?

When the company is large enough to need marketing leadership every day: managing a sizeable team, sitting in every leadership meeting, and owning a large budget. The quiz says so when your answers point there.

When is an agency the better choice?

When your direction is already clear and what is missing is capacity to execute. A good agency or specialist will get more done for the money than a strategist.

Do I need to sign up to take it?

No. You answer the questions first. At the end, you tell Ahmad where to send your answer: it appears on screen right away, and the full version, with your next 30 days, arrives by email.
